Angling Lines,

Fishing in Scotland

by Bruce Sandison

Foreword by Jeremy Paxton

Bruce Sandison, for what seems like generations, has been a prominent figure in angling in Scotland with a day job consisting of going fishing and writing about it, which he does  very well indeed. His regular column in The Press and Journal has been a must read for many anglers in the North not to mention his contributions in publications throughout the land. He is a stalwart campaigner for action on the issue of salmon farming where his drive and energy has been effective in raising the profile of the iniquitous rape of our West Highland migratory fisheries. His tales of fishing exploits with friends and family have been therapeutic to the bruised egos of many an angling sage with legends of experience in the art of the angle beaten regularly by some young sprog with a twig and a bent pin.

With a foreword by the surgically sharp Jeremy Paxton, 'Angling Lines'  by Bruce Sandison is a collection of 141 angling stories selected from the many published in the Press and Journal over the years. More to the point the book is a must read where to fish guide to the trout and salmon fishing in the wild and splendiferous places of Scotland

Generously, Sandison has not only provided information about the best spots to fish on each water, he gives map references for those of you who are smarty pants enough to be able to read a map, advice on the best flies, how to access the water, whether bank or boat fishing is effective and where to walk without being drowned or absorbed into a bottomless peat bog to be found millennia later gripping archaeological artefacts like your rod, line and wallet. For this advice alone the book is worth the buy at £9.99.

I found the book informative, easy on the eye with iconic Highland fishing photographs that took me back to my childhood braving the cold waters of the river Shin in shorts while hunting for wild brownies. The book is full of fishy stories of success and failure, images of nature, wild life encountered and the satisfaction obtained by just being there. It sums up the Nirvana of angling; to fish in glorious places, catch nowt and come home happy as Larry (or occasionally with a shoulder achingly heavy bag of fish).

Sandison, for a man of such fishing lineage, has a way of making his angling knowledge understandable, fascinating, unintimidating and refreshingly different from the oodles of expert stuff we get in the angling press today.

Grab a copy and read it along with the Spinfish Where to Fish Directory. It will take you to places where the fish swim free and their food comes packaged according to nature's menu. Places where it matters nought whether your catch comes three to the pound or so big it needs a Nepalese porter, off spring or good friend to cart it off the hills for you.

'Angling Lines' is a book to own, to dip into just for fun or as an essential for planning a foray to the wilder waters of Scotland, the information, locations, and contacts are invaluable.
