The Jim Boyd Fishing Reports

Orchill Loch Trout Fishery

Braco

Week Ending 25th July 2010

It has been a very changeable week with the weather so fish have been caught at various depths.   On top of the water the Daddy Longlegs and Hoppers have been giving great sport again with plenty of brownies being caught and released.   The management are back to cutting the weed again which always causes an abundance of feeding being released from the bottom for the fish to feed on.

Eddie McKeown from Kirkintilloch caught a 5 lb fish on a buzzer which broke the tip of his rod, giving him a good excuse to buy a new one! Harry Bakker from Sauchie had 3 fish for 6lbs on a Damsel,
Frank Malkiewicz, Tullibody, 5 for,9lbs on a Damsel, Alec Whyte, Alva, 2 for 5lbs 12oz on traditionals and T Gellatly, Stirling, used a Shipman’s Buzzers to take 3 fish weighing 8lbs. Week Ending 18th July 2010

It was another changeable week of weather with plenty of activity on the top of the water.   The anglers using small dry flies on the top have been getting good sport with a lot of natural brownies which have been safely returned.  On the windiest days the sand martins are picking off the flies which is always a good sign there are plenty of flies around.

Allan Hamilton from Kilsyth had the heaviest fish a 9lb 8oz beauty included in his catch of 3 for 15lbs 8oz all taken on a Hopper and Jock Esplin, Bonnybridge, had a lovely 7lb 8oz fish included in his 3 for 12lbs 8oz that were all taken on a Pinkie. Last Sunday was certainly one of the worst days experienced at the fishery or a long time.  There was no one fishing when we had the thunder and lightning but one man came on just afterwards, Peter Boyle from Alva and got 3 fish for 7lbs 2oz very quickly on a Black and Green Fritz while it was still blowing a gale and very wet.  It has been a week of changeable weather but even after all the rain the water is still warm and so the fish are still taking fairly slowly with a wide variety of flies.

Jock Esplin from Bonnybridge caught a beautiful 10lb 4oz on a wee Black and Green Bug, Anne Orr, Tullibody, 2 for 4lbs 8oz on Buzzers, Wilson Orr, Tullibody, 2 for 7lbs 8oz on Buzzers, William Docherty, Tillicoultry, 3 for 12lbs 8oz on a Green Nomad and William Cummings, Tillicoultry, used a Buzzer to take 3 fish weighing 8lbs 8oz. 4th July 2010

It has been another good fishing week with a nice fresh wind making catching fish easier.   Small natural flies along with the usual lures have been doing well.   There have been lots of flies on the water, the sand martins let you know when flies are hatching as they are always swooping down to feed.

On Saturday the heaviest fish of the week was caught by regular angler Hamish Carmichael from Alloa who included a beautiful 10 pounder in his five fish for 20lbs taken on a Yellow Dancer. A Bloodworm proved lucky for Rhys O'Connor from Falkirk when he caught a 7lb 12oz fish in his 4 for 17lbs 8oz and Graham King from Almondbank caught a lovely 7 pounder in his 3 fish for 12 lbs on an Olive Dancer. Also taking big specimen fish were Craig Hoehle from Denny who was delighted to catch an 8lb 4oz rainbow on a Black & Green Dancer and Hector Wilson from Bannockburn included a 7lb 8oz fish in his 3 for 12lbs 12oz taken on Buzzers.

28th June 2010

There have been quite a few good bags of fish coming off despite the weather being very hot some days but luckily it has not been constant.   The depth the fish are being caught at is varying with the brightness and heat of the sun. Tactics just have to change according to the conditions and a wide variety of flies have been tempting the fish.

Last Thursday this week Alex Sidey, Perth (who is over 80) was a very delighted and happy angler to catch his heaviest rainbow to date a 6 pounder, on a Yellow Dancer.   John Meek, Tullibody, had 3 fish for 1

With the lovely weather last week the water has been fishing well but slowly under the surface and a little deeper when the sun was very bright.   With such an abundance of feeding for the fish just now a wide variety of flies have been catching with a lot of the smaller ones doing well. Finding the depth and fishing very, very slowly seems to work in the warmer conditions.

There were some hefty specimens in the bags with Craig Hoehle from Denny taking a beautiful 8lbs 12oz rainbow on a Black and Green Dancer, Manuel Geraldus, Halbeath, had 3 fish for 15lbs including one at 8lbs 10oz on a Damsel, Mike Lord, Perth, 4 for 15lbs 8oz – best 6lbs 8oz on a Yellow Dancer and John McGilvary, Almondbank, took 3 fish for 10lbs 120z – best a lovely Blue at 6 lbs a small Green and White lure.

Last week-end it looked like the fishery was going to be clear of ice this week with cloud cover and snow, instead the temperature plummeted to - 5 to 6 every night so the water has been mostly iced up again this week with only a few anglers being able to fish.

Anglers are advised to phone to see what it is like as the water is so cold that it freezes very quickly. The fish are still taking very slowly and a bit deeper than normal for here with Pinkie, Black and Green Fritz Yellow Dancer and Orange Fritz

Ian Brown from Denny had 4 fish for 9lbs on a Pinkie, John Stevenson, Cowie, 5 for 11lbs on a Black & Silver, Harry Dunbar, Airdrie, 4 for 8lbs 8oz on a White Buzzers, Ian Lawson, Airdrie, 4 for 9lbs 4oz and Ian Sloan, Perth, 4 for 8lbs on a Polar Bear. It was another quiet week but there have been plenty of fish moving  around and most anglers have been taking them slowly with anything from a variety of Fritzes to small Bugs and Hare's Ear. Even when the fish are mid- water floating line does well with a gold head to take your line down slowly.

As owner Elizabeth Jackson says “ With the very changeable weather we just have to take each day as it comes and make the best of the good days, such as Wednesday which was beautiful.”

The fish are lying from mid to the bottom of the water because of temperature and the Pink, Black and Green Cat along with Buzzers have been doing well.

With the help of the pump there has been a slow thaw of the ice on the water this week with more than half the stands now free of ice.  The anglers who braved the cold last week-end were catching fish near the bottom and mid water with plenty of fish plucking at their flies.   The Pink Fritz was doing well along with the Yellow Dancer, Black and Green Fritz and Buzzers.

Week Ending 22nd December 2009

It was a very quiet week with the water being partly frozen even with the pump running as there has been up to -5 degrees of frost.   It has been lovely when the sun is shining as it looks like a winter wonderland. The anglers who have been fishing have caught them very slowly and sometimes under the edge of the ice.

The fishery will be open over the holidays weather permitting the only day that is booked is Monday the 28th December, Jock's bottle Day, which he has fully booked.   Please phone to see what the weather is like up here as it can change so much overnight.   We do not have global warming is this part of the country!!!

Elizabeth Jackson would like to thank all anglers who have supported her during the year and would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.

Week Ending 13th December 2009

First of all owner Elizabeth Jackson would like to stress very clearly that no fish were lost recently at Orchill as there is  a grid on the outlet. It is difficult enough keeping a fishery open during the winter months so stupid rumours like this are perfectly ridiculous and most unhelpful. Elizabeth explains that it was their field at the back of the loch that was flooded and in any exceptionally high water situation the fish all go to the bottom and stay there.  Any fishery or fish farm owner take every precaution not to lose fish as they are too expensive and cannot be insured.   Luckily most of the regulars know this and have not believed this wild story.

With the frosty weather the fish have been getting caught at various depths, very slowly with a lot of fish being lost with anglers striking too quickly.   Black and Green Fritz, Yellow Dancer, Damsel and Cat have been taking most of the fish.

The Falcon Club had a very good social day spending most of it in the chalet eating and telling stories as it was freezing outside and as always they enjoyed their day regardless of the weather. All in all they took 22 fish for 47lbs 8oz and lost as many more whilst Willie Barr won the morning comp with 5 fish for 9lbs 4oz.

Also doing well were John Stevenson from Cowie with 4 fish for 12lbs 4oz on a Black & Green Fritz, John Knox, Cowdenbeath, 4 fish for 12lbs 4oz on a Mini Cat, Matt Kirk, Helensburgh, 4 for 8lbs 4oz on a Black & Green and Eddie McGowan, Helensburgh, used a Black & Green to take 2 for 5lbs 8oz. Paul McKenzie from Perth caught 4 fish weighing 9lbs 8oz on a Green & White, Harry Irvine, Blairgowrie, 6 for 16lbs on an Orange Fritz, Barry Cowan, Stenhousemuir, 5 for 10lbs on a Bloodworm and Andy Airnes from Clackmannan used a Damsel to take a fine basket of 3 for 9lbs.Stuart Morin from Clackmannan had 3 for 8lbs on a Damsel and Jim Prentice, Tullibody, 5 for 13lbs on a White and Coral.

Week Ending 6th December 2009

It was been another quiet week with the weather changing from day to day. The dry frosty days are the more pleasant for doing anything including fishing and the fish have been varying from two to three feet down to on the bottom depending on the weather. The usual flies are doing well including the Damsel, Buzzers, Yellow Dancer and various Fritz patterns.

Week Ending 22nd Nov 2009

Owner, Elizabeth Jackson has closed the water for a few days until the ground gets a chance to dry up.   With the heavy rain all day on Thursday the sand and gravel got washed off the bottom drive and into the burn which overflowed like a sea of water down the flat newly sown grass area and through the fence into the pond making the path like a river.  The fish of course are fine lying in the bottom out of harm’s way. Elizabeth said ‘’ I hope to open again on Wednesday (25th November) once the sand has settled and hopefully the ground has dried up a bit’’.

Week Ending 15th November 2009

The fish have been varying in the depth they are being caught from day to day with the weather but a very slow retrieve is working as the water is now a lot colder.

Week Ending 23rd August 2009

Last week must have been one of the wettest we have had’’ says Elizabeth Jackson ‘’ with some lovely sunny spells and then within seconds we are getting drowned by torrential rain’’ The windy conditions have also been changing the depth the fish are lying  and finding the depth they are at is very important.  There are of course still lots of natural feeding in the water and plenty of flies hatching off and the last few days there have been a lot of daddies.  There has again been a wide variety of flies catching and all different colours taking fish on the one day.

Last Saturday the Linden FFC from Stirling had 10 fish for 36lbs 8oz and also returned several brownies and John Wright had the heaviest basket with 5 fish for 15lbs 4oz.

With the warmer weather the fish are taking that bit slower and are still taking something different from all the natural abundance of food they have to choose from just now.   Most days there has been a good ripple on the water which is helping hide the angler’s lines in the clear water. The Damsel Nymph, Yellow Dancer, various coloured Fritz patterns, Buzzers, Diawl Bach, Hares ear, and Dries have all been doing well on a floating line.

It has been a great week for loads of life on the water and in it and on Tuesday Murray Hunter enjoyed watching a fantastic may fly hatch whilst he was fishing and the fish were just gulping them all up as fast as they could. It is so good to see such an abundance of flies, water beetles and minnows on and in the water. This is the time to use dry flies or more natural imitatives but as usual the rainbows will take a variety of flies, but as owner Elizabeth Jackson says “they are being harder to catch as I am sure they can tell the difference between the real thing and the imitation”.

Last Sunday the Riverside FFC. had a good day taking 21 fish for 55lbs 12oz with Ernie Hughes taking the heaviest basket with 5 fish for 13lbs 13oz on a Black Buzzer. It has been a good fishing week so long as you could stand the winds along with the sunshine of our summer!!  When it was calm the small Nymphs, Buzzers, Diawl Bach were doing well when calm and the Damsel, Yellow Dancer and various Fritz patterns worked best in the wind.

It has been another good fishing week with plenty of fish being caught on the surface or about 2 3 feet down.  There has been a lot of fly life on the water with the sand martins and house martins swarming down for the fly life. It is a good sign to see the birds feeding off the surface of the water as it usually means that small flies should work.   Small nymphs and buzzers, Black Pennell, Bloodworm, Hare's Ear and of course the usual Damsels and Fritz patterns are all doing well.

Crawford Millar from Tillicoultry took 4 fish for 10lbs on a CT Cat, Jim McCormack, Tillicoultry, 4 for 10lbs 8oz on a Damsel, George Twaddle, Sauchie, 3 for 9lbs 4oz on a Yellow Dancer and Peter Paterson, Menstrie, 4 for 11lbs 8oz on Buzzers. Week Ending 15th February 2009

The fishery is open again now that the very hard frosts and snow covering have finally gone. Anglers should note that after extremely cold conditions and when the water starts to warm up – relatively speaking that is – the trout often go on a feeding frenzy and exceptional sport can be had. The usual lures like the Yellow Dancer, Damsel will do well but Black & Green based lures are well worth a swim.

Week Ending 2nd February 2009

Until this frosty weather gets milder anglers are strongly advised to phone in advance to check that the fishery is open.
