Dee

The Welsh Dee rises in the hills above Bala reservoir, which at 1100 acres is the biggest natural lake in Wales, and flows 60 miles to the sea. Compensation flows from Bala and three other reservoirs, Alwen, Brenig and Celyn help keep the river in good trim throughout the season. Stocks of salmon have suffered, as with many rivers in Wales, how ever things are on the up and up with the buy out of nets on the Dee and in Ireland. Over 20,000 sea trout enter the Dee each year making it a quality sea trout fishery.

Bangor on Dee Salmon Angling Association

Have 4.5 miles of fishing for salmon, sea trout, brown trout, grayling and course fish on the Welsh Dee 5 miles south east of Wrexham. There are some spring fish, angling in early season is fly only using large flies and sunk lines, best flies are Willie Gunn, Tosh and Waddingtons. Grilse enter the river in June and July with the main runs coming in the summer through to the end of the season. The best summer flies are the Ally Shrimp, General Practitioner, Thunder and Lightening and Hairy Mary size 10 to 14. Spinning is allowed later in the season with Flying Cs and Tobys being favoured cast across and slightly upstream so that they swing round with the flow of the river.

Season and visitor tickets are available and fishing is restricted to beat 1 which is about 2 miles long (New Bridge to Graig Cottages) with some good fly water. Tickets from the 'Middle Shop', The Royal Oak and Buck House Hotel. Contact Mrs Gill Williams on 01978 781131 for further information. Google Map Reference 53.004981, -2.909860

They also recon some 10,000 sea trout run the Dee, night fishing recommended but please reccie the water thoroughly during daytime before trying night fishing.

Brown trout to 1 lb are quite common and the population is on the up.

While you are looking at the beats, if you want to join the club on seeing that fab water go to Tariffs and you can download a membership appilication. For the fishing on offer the price is a steal. Salmon tickets and Trout / Grayling tickets available.

VCAC, in Denbight, have an enviable amount of fishing available to them. They have beats on 9 rivers and fishing on 5 lakes, wow!:

River Clwyd. 4 sections of the river with 9 different beats offering fishing for salmon, sea trout, brown trout.

Dee, 3 beats for brown trout, grayling, coarse fish. Acces to Bala DAA water for salmon back end on the Llandderfel beat.

Cledwyn, 1, one mile beat for brown trout and late season sea trout.

Elwy, 4 beats on a spate river for salmon, also wild brown trout.

Conwy, 600 yards at Waterloo Bridge, salmon and sea trout.

Wheeler, wild brown trout and tales of sea trout and escapee rainbows.

Llafar and Lliw. The Llafar is a wild trout water stocked from time to time while the Llwi is a wild trout water, any method except maggot.

Trywern, water is controlled by a dam on Llyn Celyn so heigths can vary suddenly leaving you stranded on the wrong bank. Fishing is for wild brown trout supplimented with stocks of fingerlings. Salmon back end when the artifical spates can spice up sport.

Tanat, no details.

The lakes are:

Llyn Clywedog, wild brown trout and over wintered rainbows.

Hafod Pools, pike and perch.

Llyn Glan-y-Gon wild brown trout, limited access as it is privately owned.

Llyn Cwmprysor, wild brown trout.

Llyn Tegid, quite a variety of species including gwnniad a freshwater white fish Coregonus pennanti found only on Tegid (Bala lake). Herein lies a tale of woe. As with other fisheries folk, in the past, fished for pike with ruffe as live bait. Some fish survived and escaped other were just tipped in the water at the end of session. The result here (and on lochs like Loch Lomond for example) is that the ruffe have thrived and feed on the spawn and fry of native species, in this case endangering the rare gwyniad. To save them I believe that stocks have been planted out in Llyn Arenig Fawr.

As well as the above the lake holds pike, perch, roach, bream, grayling, trout and some salmon in late season.

For all of the above the membership cost is very resonableand includes full membership game and coarse and coarse only. There are discounts for students 18 to 25, juniors 13 to 18, and over 65s. Under 12s fish for free. Apply on line.
