River Spey

There are fantastic trout on the Spey however below Aviemore you will have to shell out for a salmon ticket which makes the cost prohibitive, but if you are salmon fishing take a trout rod with you in May and June with a dry rough olive, Greenwell, Klinkhammer or a Yellow Sally, you will not regret it.

I must say it is about time that the Spey climbed down from it's high horse when it comes to reasonable access for trout fishing. Yeah the Spey does deserve to be protected but I thought that the protection came with the proviso that all anglers would have reasonable access, I don't call having to buy a salmon ticket reasonable. The Tweed is high tariff water for salmon, posh as you get, but it has angling clubs up and down its length offering trout fishing even on Floors for just a few quid.

Abernethy Angling Association

6 miles of double bank fishing with 15 named pools from Broomhill Bridge to the Millars Pool just above Boat of Garten bridge. Catch returns in 2006 were some 750 sea trout and 139 salmon, best sea trout 7lbs and best salmon 15lbs. The club have installed wheel chair access to the Nethy Pool with concrete stands. AAIA have merged with the Aviemore Angling Improvement Association and now offer fishing on 4 miles single bank around Aviemore with 16 named pools. There are some impressive returns from this water including a 14.5lb brown trout.
